Benefits of Using a Humidifier in the Winter Months

Posted in Heating, HVAC Education

Our air-conditioners worked overtime this summer to keep us cool, and now the torch will be passed to our heating systems. But, you may be thinking, what else can I do to minimize the affect of the cold on my home and the health of my family?

We have an easy to use and cost-effective answer: humidifiers.

Below, we have listed a few of the benefits to using humidifiers inside your home.

Better Moisture

As the temperature outside cools and your heater is running on full blast, the air in your home will become dryer. This lack of moisture can irritate your skin, leading to dryness, dullness, or accelerated aging. A humidifier can replace the moisture in the air and help prevent these damaging effects. Properly moisturized skin will give you a holiday glow for all your holiday parties.

Happy Sinuses

Your sinuses may not like the allergies of spring, but they dislike the dryness of winter even more! Winter air can dry out sinuses and lower your resistance to bacteria. The same logic applies to your vocal chords. By sleeping with a humidifier, you will wake up with a more comfortable nose—and throat!

Faster Healing

If you do contract a cold or a sinus infection, a humidifier can shorten your recovery time. It will keep your nasal passages and throat moist, which can lead to faster healing time and reduced symptoms.

Healthy Houseplants

Plants are a natural filter and can pull toxins out of the air. But, without proper moisture, they droop. Using a humidifier to moistened the air keep your houseplants healthy—which helps keep you healthy, too!

Reduced Heating Costs

Moist air feels warmer than dry air. It’s true. By adding moisture back into the air in your home, it will feel warmer. If the air feels warmer, you won’t have to rely as heavily on your heater, which will save you money on your heating bill.

Improved Sleep

Do you snore? Does it get worse in the winter? A humidifier can help. Snoring worsens as our sinuses and throats dry out. A humidifier will put the moisture back in the air, leading to a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Reminder!

Humidifiers only work when they are properly maintained. Make sure to clean your humidifier regularly to prevent the growth of bacteria or mold. Use distilled water to prevent a buildup of minerals. Make sure to clean the machine at least once per week and change filters on a regular basis.
