It’s time to dust off the grime and get ready for summer! We all get the urge during the spring to do some heavy-duty cleaning, but how often does that cleaning bug reach your HVAC system?

There are a few things you should do to prepare your HVAC equipment for summer.

Mop More.

Dusting and mopping become even more important in the spring, especially if you tend to keep your windows open. Unfortunately, along with fresh air, open windows allow dust, dirt and allergens to infiltrate. These microscopic invaders can accumulate on your surfaces when you don’t keep up with cleaning duties. Without regular cleaning, dust and allergens will lay in wait until they are disturbed. Once released, they can compromise the air quality in your home.

Wipe Windows.

Cleaning your windows has added benefits. A clean window is a pretty window, and will allow you to enjoy the natural light of a summer day. The added benefit is that letting in some sunshine during the day can actually make it feel warmer during those cool nights.

Filter Fixes.

Dirty filters cannot function properly. We recommend changing your filter, once before the heating season (fall) and once at the start of the cooling season (spring). Here’s a tip, make sure to turn off your equipment before you change your filters. If you are unsure, it never hurts to ask. Call a professional if you are unsure or if the filter is in a tough-to-reach place.

Duct Dusting.

Ducts are dark, and sometimes very dirty. They are ideal places for insects and critters to call home. If you think there are unwanted visitors in your ductwork, schedule a professional cleaning. This will ensure that you’re not breathing in anything unsavory that’s been trapped in your ductwork. Bonus: A duct cleaning appointment can help you to get ahead of other problems that you are not aware of, like mold.

Clear Clutter.

Dust loves clutter. That means all the junk on your shelves and in your closets can accumulate dust, which can aggravate allergies and lower indoor air quality. Here’s a tip, if you are cleaning an area that hasn’t been touched in years, like the garage, wear a mask.

Wipeout Weeds.

Weeds like to grow where they are not wanted. In order to maximize airflow around your air conditioner, you will need to clear the area of all unwanted plant life. We recommend keeping a 2-3 foot area of clearance around your outdoor HVAC unit (this includes plant life, outdoor furniture, and toys).

Professional Polish.

The scorching heat of summer is setting in.  Make sure your cooling system is in fighting condition. Has it been awhile since your last appointment? Consider having your system cleaned by a professional to maximize airflow and performance.
