Three Natural Cleaning Supplies That Can Improve Indoor Air Quality

Posted in HVAC Education, Summer

When was the last time you read the label on the back of your cleaning supplies? You might be surprised to learn that the even the most common cleansers are full of phosphates, chlorine, ammonia and even a few types of acid. If you clean your home regularly, you may be ingesting or inhaling toxic chemicals can lead to lung complications, irritation, and corrosion of delicate tissues in the body. Many of these supplies are a danger to children and pets. Cleaning surfaces with them can even release toxins into the air. Luckily, we have a list of healthy and safe alternatives!

Microfiber

Microfiber is a special type of fabric made of nylon. The fibers themselves are almost invisible to the human eye, and packed closely together for maximum efficiency. The fibers are excellent for capturing dirt, making scrubbing or dusting faster and easier. An easy way to mimic the effectiveness of a household cleaner is to combine a microfiber cloth and water. It’s the same clean, without the toxins!

Baking Soda

Baking soda is the secret weapon in any home cleaning arsenal. Combine it with water to form a thick paste that is an unstoppable (and safe) method for cleaning grimy ovens; mixing salt, baking soda, and borax can create a strong scourer for fighting off soap scum, and hydrogen peroxide with baking soda is a great way to make fabric stains obsolete. Other easy recipes for household cleaners can be found online or on Pinterest.

Fruit

Many store-brand air fresheners are full of hidden toxins. Fruit as a homemade air freshener is less expensive and safer for your home, especially if you have small children or pets. Citrus fruits, like lemon and grapefruit, are popular choices; recipes that combine household ingredients like cinnamon or vanilla with these fruits are a fantastic way to safely banish odor from your home.
